Chargers Would Like To Sign Antonio Gates Before Camp Begins
6 years agoThe Los Angeles Chargers would prefer to re-sign tight end Antonio Gates before training camp starts, according to a team source. There has been mutual interest from both sides in a reunion ever since Hunter Henry blew out his knee, so we're a bit surprised nothing has happened yet. Gates, 38, is a shell of his former self and had just 30 catches for 316 yards and three scores in 2017. He'd likely be the main pass-catching tight end if he re-signed, though, and he's built plenty of chemistry with quarterback Philip Rivers over the years. Still, Gates would still probably be only a touchdown-dependent TE2.
