Carlos Martinez Dazzles Against Philadelphia
4 years agoSt Louis Cardinals starting pitcher Carlos Martinez turned back the clock on Tuesday in Missouri. Pitching into the seventh inning for the first time since July 7, 2018, he befuddled Phillies hitters throughout the game. Allowing only one earned run on just two hits -- a Bryce Harper RBI double and a Brad Miller single -- Martinez looked like the two-time All-Star he is. Sporting a disappointing 6.00 ERA through his first four starts of the season, Martinez's secondary numbers entering Tuesday showed there was reason to be optimistic about the Cardinals starter. A 4.18 FIP and 13:5 K:BB across 21 innings makes Tuesday's outing not feel like as much of the outlier it appears to be on the surface. Martinez isn't a must-start pitcher, but the right home matchups moving forward can pay dividends for fantasy managers who are savvy enough to pick and choose his appearances wisely.
