Carl Edwards Jr. Agrees With Padres On Minor-League Deal
9 months agoFree-agent reliever Carl Edwards Jr. agreed on a minor-league contract with the San Diego Padres on Friday, according to sources. Edwards, 32, most recently spent time with the Washington Nationals and Chicago Cubs but he hasn't appeared in a big-league game since 2023 with the Nationals, when he went 1-3 with a 3.69 ERA, a 1.52 WHIP, two saves, 24 strikeouts and 17 walks in 31 2/3 relief innings. The 32-year-old right-hander had a sharp 1.85 ERA, a 1.44 WHIP, seven saves, 22 strikeouts and 15 walks for Triple-A Iowa this year before being released by the Cubs in June. Edwards is expected to be assigned to Triple-A El Paso soon and will operate as right-handed relief depth for the Friars for the rest of the season. He's always had plenty of strikeout upside (career 28.2% K rate) but will need to show better control to resurface in the majors in 2024 with San Diego.

Carl Edwards Jr., Cubs Agree On Minor-League Deal
1 year agoFree-agent relief pitcher Carl Edwards Jr. and the Chicago Cubs agreed to a minor-league deal on Friday, according to a source familiar with the deal. Edwards had a 3.69 ERA in 31 2/3 innings with the Washington Nationals last season. His deal with the Cubs includes an invitation to spring training. Edwards will be reuniting with the Cubs after breaking into the big leagues with them in 2015. He spent the first four seasons of his career in the Windy City before joining the San Diego Padres in 2019. The 32-year-old veteran right-hander will be attempting to make the Cubs' bullpen out of spring training to open the 2024 season, but he won't be anywhere near the fantasy radar. In his nine years in the majors, Edwards has gone 16-14 with a 3.54 ERA (3.71 FIP), 1.20 WHIP, seven saves and a 28.2 percent strikeout rate in 280 innings pitched over 295 relief appearances.

Carl Edwards Jr. Shut Down From Throwing
2 years agoWashington Nationals relief pitcher Carl Edwards Jr. (shoulder) has been shut down from throwing for the time being. The right-hander has been rehabbing a shoulder injury and came away from an outing feeling some discomfort in his shoulder. The team did additional testing which revealed a stress reaction in his right shoulder. The right-hander has been sidelined since mid-June due to shoulder inflammation. The veteran reliever will stop his rehab assignment for now, so his 2023 campaign could possibly be over.

Carl Edwards Jr. Records Rare Save
2 years agoWashington Nationals relief pitcher Carl Edwards Jr. picked up his second save of the year in a 4-1 win over the Houston Astros. After Kyle Finnegan pitched the eighth and Hunter Harvey blew a save in the ninth, the Nats went to their next option in Edwards Jr. in the tenth. He got the job done, striking out one in a clean inning of work. The 31-year-old has been decent this year, posting a 3.03 ERA and 1.38 WHIP with 22 strikeouts in 10 ⅓ IP, but he will likely remain the Nationals' third option for saves unless one of Finnegan or Harvey tailspin. He can be left to deep saves plus holds leagues for now.
