3 years agoThe St. Louis Cardinals reopened MLB free agency on Friday by signing right-hander Drew VerHagen to a two-year, $5.5 million deal, according to a source. VerHagen pitched for the Detroit Tigers from 2014-19 and played in Japan the last two seasons. He will make up to $2.5 million this year and $3 million in 2023, with up to $ million in performance bonuses each season. The 31-year-old has a 5.11 ERA and 18.3% strikeout rate in 199 career innings at the big-league level over six seasons, all with the Tigers. Of his 127 outings in the majors, VerHagen has made only eight starts, so he'll function as relief depth for St. Louis in 2022. In two years in Japan as a starter, he had a 3.49 ERA, 1.17 WHIP and a 25% strikeout rate.
