5 years agoThe St. Louis Cardinals are expected to pursue San Francisco Giants closer Will Smith as the trade deadline approaches. The Cardinals were engaged in serious discussions with the Giants about Smith in the offseason, according to sources. St. Louis is two games out of first place and is looking to make the playoffs for the first time since 2015. Smith, who will be a free agent after this year, has been one of the best closers in the first half with 23 saves, tied for third most in the majors. The Dodgers, Brewers and Rangers are also interested, as will be many other teams. Carlos Martinez has a 1.38 ERA and three saves since becoming the ninth-inning man, but Smith would likely see most of the save chances if he's acquired.--Keith Hernandez - RotoBaller
