Cardinals Are OK With Not Naming a Closer
7 years agoThe St. Louis Cardinals seem content to go into the season without naming a closer. While reliever Luke Gregerson was seen as the favorite to man the ninth inning, he is dealing with an oblique injury and has been limited to just one Grapefruit League appearance. Meanwhile, Dominic Leone and Tyler Lyons have pitched well enough to bring themselves into the conversation. Manager Mike Matheny heavily implied the possibility of a closer-by-committee situation, saying, “I don’t think we need to leave here with a closer. I don’t think we need to leave here with that title. What’s more likely to happen is we don’t need to start thinking outside the box until it’s a necessity. Let’s try this. This should fit. If it doesn’t then, okay, it’s a hybrid." If any of the three are named closer, they'd be a solid fantasy pick. As members of a committee, though, upside is stripped away and leaves the three relievers as holds options only.
