6 years agoCameron Smith continued his poor form at the U.S. Open this week, shooting rounds of 79 and 72, respectively. For Smith, the missed cut marks the fourth consecutive cut he has failed to make on the PGA Tour, which has been propelled mostly by his bad first-round play. In his last four tournaments, Smith has had a scoring average of 77.25 during his opening round. Conversely, he has been four shots better during his second round performances in that time frame, averaging a 73.25. Golf is such a data-driven game that everyone is always looking for reasons players have success or lack thereof it, but in this particular circumstance, it is hard to come up with a statistical basis for the disparity between the two rounds. Smith's sample size is too small to derive any real correlation that he is starting to struggle during his opening round performances, but it is something to keep an eye on for the time being. --Spencer Aguiar - RotoBaller
