Cam Smith Starting In Right Field On Monday
2 days agoHouston Astros prospect Cam Smith is making the start in right field and is hitting sixth for Monday's exhibition contest against Triple-A Sugar Land. The Astros haven't made any official decisions on their final roster for Opening Day this Thursday, but the fact that the 22-year-old Smith is in the lineup at all on Monday is a good indication that he'll break camp with the team this year. He could also very well be the team's Opening Day right fielder after impressing to the tune of a .342/.419/.711 slash line with a 1.129 OPS, four home runs, a triple, 11 RBI and eight runs scored in 15 Grapefruit League games this spring. If Smith opens the year on the Opening Day roster, the Astros aren't just going to park him on the bench, so he should at least be in a platoon with veteran Chas McCormick. Smith should already be stashed in keeper leagues, but he could be worth a bench spot in deep-mixed leagues as well.

Cam Smith Hits Two-Run Triple In Monday's Exhibition Contest
2 days agoHouston Astros outfield prospect Cam Smith started in right field for the Astros' exhibition game on Monday against their Triple-A affiliate, the Sugar Land Space Cowboys, and went 1-for-3 with a two-run triple and a run scored. It was the 22-year-old's first game at Houston's home field now that the team has wrapped up Grapefruit League play, and he continued his push for an Opening Day roster spot. The 2024 first-round draft pick was fired up after the triple and manager Joe Espada was quoted as saying, "We love that, the guys really enjoy the energy and the passion. We need some of that." If the youngster can secure a spot, which seems very likely at this point, he'd be worthy of consideration for a bench spot in deep-mixed fantasy leagues.

Cam Smith Stays Hot, Smacks Fourth Spring Home Run
7 days agoHouston Astros third base/outfield prospect Cam Smith continued his hot hitting on Wednesday, going 2-for-4 with a two-run home run in an 8-2 Grapefruit League loss to the Mets. The home run was his fourth of the spring and he's now collected 11 RBI. Just a couple of days ago, it was reported that Smith had a "good" chance at making the Opening Day roster, and he hasn't done anything since then to make that any less true, only reinforced it. If he were to make the roster, it would likely be to play right field, with incumbent right fielder Chas McCormick hitting just .143 (4-for-28) this spring, although he does own an impressive 11:4 BB:K and has stolen four bags. Smith was selected in the first round of the 2024 Draft, and with 32 minor league games under his belt (none higher than Double-A), it would be quite the ascension if he were to make the roster, but the Florida State product appears to be forcing the team's hand. Going after pick 400 in current fantasy drafts, he could be a worthy late-round stash just in case and could be a steal if he managed to stick with the team for the entire season.

Cam Smith Has A "Good" Chance To Make Opening Day Roster
1 week agoA source has told FOX 26 Houston's Will Kunkel that prospect Cam Smith has a "good" chance to make the team's Opening Day roster. If Smith does make the roster out of camp, he should see regular at-bats between third base and the outfield. The 22-year-old is impressing the coaching staff this spring by hitting .423 with a 1.362 OPS, three home runs and nine RBI in 26 at-bats in Grapefruit League play. Smith was acquired from the Chicago Cubs in the offseason trade that sent outfielder Kyle Tucker to Chicago. He has played in only 32 games in the minor leagues after the Cubs took him 14th overall in last year's draft out of Florida State, but he could be forcing the Astros' hand. If Smith does make the roster, most of his playing time is likely to come in right field in Houston, and he could be worth a bench stash in deep-mixed leagues.

Cam Smith Starting In Right Field On Thursday
2 weeks agoHouston Astros third base/outfield prospect Cam Smith is getting the starting nod in right field on Thursday. The Astros have provided their top prospect with opportunities to learn the outfield during camp. This is his first time covering right field in a Grapefruit League game. The Astros acquired the former 14th-overall pick in a package that sent Kyle Tucker to the Chicago Cubs. In addition, Smith is slated to bat cleanup in a lineup that contains all major league players, which suggests he could be in the running to make the Opening Day roster. Through nine games this spring, Smith has held a stellar .450/.560/.850 line with a triple and two home runs. Last summer, Smith appeared in 32 games in the Cubs system and posted a .313/.396/.609 line. If Smith makes the Opening Day roster, he is worth taking a late-round flier on in all standard leagues.
