7 years agoMiami Marlins starter Caleb Smith has been a pleasant surprise for the Fish during the early goings of the 2018 season. The former Yankee prospect earned himself a spot in Miami's rotation and has caught fire over his last few starts. Despite a 1-3 record, Smith owns an impressive 1.26 WHIP and has struck out 19 batters over his last two starts. The lefty looks for his third-straight quality outing on Saturday when he and the Marlins take on the Cincinnati Reds. If you're in need of a pitcher with some upside, Smith is someone to target.--Steven Slivka

2 years agoFree-agent left-hander Caleb Smith agreed to a minor-league deal with the Pittsburgh Pirates on Thursday. The deal includes an invitation to major-league spring training. Smith previously pitched for the New York Yankees, Miami Marlins and Arizona Diamondbacks. The 31-year-old southpaw spent last year with the Diamondbacks and went 1-3 with a 4.11 ERA (5.57 FIP), 1.37 WHIP and 21.5 percent walk rate in 70 innings over 44 appearances (only one start). Smith has made 64 career major-league starts in his six seasons, but he's only made 14 starts the last two years in the desert. He'll need to cut down on the free passes issued if he wants an opportunity to compete for a roster spot on Pittsburgh's big-league club in 2023.--Keith Hernandez - RotoBaller

He finished the 2022 season with a 1-3 record, a 4.11 ERA, 1.37 WHIP, and a 65:39 K: BB across 70 innings. Smith will have a whole offseason to be ready for Spring Training in 2023.--Brad Camara - RotoBaller

3 years agoThe Arizona Diamondbacks optioned left-handed pitcher Caleb Smith to Triple-A on Sunday. Right-handed pitcher Matt Peacock was called up in a corresponding move. Smith began the year as a member of the team's starting rotation, but he was shelled in his first outing. Facing the San Diego Padres on April 10, he allowed five runs (four earned) over just one inning. He then allowed another five earned runs over three innings in relief this past Friday. Peacock, meanwhile, made his MLB debut with the D-backs last year. He appeared in 35 games, including eight starts, and pitched to a 4.90 ERA and a 1.56 WHIP.--Andrew Ericksen - RotoBaller
