Cade Horton Moves To Seven Day Injured List
10 months agoChicago Cubs starting pitching prospect Cade Horton (lat) was placed on the seven-day injured list on Friday with a lat injury. The top prospect in Chicago left his most recent start on May 29 early after just logging one inning of work. The Cubs will be very cautious with Horton, so he may miss an extended period of time. Horton opened the season with Double-A but earned a promotion to Triple-A early on. However, he has not shown much consistency at Triple-A, with a 7.50 ERA and 1.56 WHIP compared to the 1.25 ERA and 1.02 WHIP he held at Double-A over the past two summers. The former seventh overall selection in the 2022 MLB Draft was on pace to join the major league roster this summer, but this injury may affect that timeline. Dynasty and keeper league managers should continue to stash Horton, but redraft managers can drop him for the time being.

Cade Horton Throws Bullpen Session
1 month agoChicago Cubs starting pitching prospect Cade Horton (shoulder) completed a bullpen session on Sunday. The right-handed pitcher faced four batters in the brief session. This was the first time Horton faced live batters since being shut down last June. Horton is considered not only the team's top pitching prospect but also one of the top options in their system. Before being shut down last summer, Horton was nearing his MLB debut. He opened the 2024 campaign by getting his second look at Double-A, where he posted a stellar 1.10 ERA and a 0.96 WHIP across 16 1/3 innings. He tallied 18 punchouts and served up just two walks. He was then given a brief look at Triple-A, where he allowed 15 runs in just 18 frames. The former seventh-overall pick in the 2022 MLB Draft is a name to monitor during camp, as he should be in contention to make his MLB debut later this season if he can move past this injury. He will likely open the season with Triple-A Iowa.

Cade Horton On Track For Normal Spring Training
2 months agoAccording to Ryan Herrera of JustBaseball.com, Chicago Cubs starting pitching prospect Cade Horton (shoulder) is expected to have a normal spring training. The top arm in the Chicago system was on track to make his major-league debut last summer but was eventually shut down with a shoulder injury in May. Before the injury, Horton held a 1.10 ERA and a 0.92 WHIP at Double-A and got a brief taste of Triple-A. Fantasy managers should continue to monitor his status during spring training, as he may just need a short stint at Triple-A before reaching the major leagues. The former seventh-overall pick has held a career 3.22 ERA and 1.07 WHIP across 122 2/3 innings in the minor leagues. He has struck out 157 batters and served up 40 free passes. He should be viewed as one of the sport's top pitching prospects and will carry value in redraft leagues when promoted.

He then earned a brief taste of Triple-A ball and posted a 7.50 ERA and a 1.56 WHIP before sustaining the injury. Cade Horton Likely Done For The Year
8 months agoChicago Cubs right-hander Cade Horton (lat), the team's top pitching prospect and the 17th overall prospect per MLB Pipeline, suffered a setback in his rehab from a right-lat strain. The expectation is that he will get back to throwing, but given where we are at in the calendar, the 22-year-old getting back to competitive action before the end of the minor-league season would be difficult. The former first-rounder in 2022 was promoted from Double-A Tennessee to Triple-A Iowa on April 30 after he had a 1.10 ERA in four starts with the Smokies with 18 K's in 16 1/3 innings. In his five starts with Iowa, though, he had a 7.50 ERA in 18 innings before going on the seven-day injured list on May 31. Horton was diagnosed with a right-lat strain on June 4 and was shut down from throwing for a month. In 2023, Horton had a 2.65 ERA and 117 K's over 88 1/3 innings in 21 starts for Single-A Myrtle Beach, High-A South Bend and Tennessee.
