Buccaneers Not In A Hurry To Name Starting QB
2 years agoTampa Bay Buccaneers offensive coordinator Dave Canales said the team is in no rush to name a starting quarterback for the 2023 NFL season. The competition is open between the 25-year-old Kyle Trask and 28-year-old former No. 1 overall pick Baker Mayfield. Trask has yet to start an NFL game and has thrown just nine passes in two seasons. Mayfield spent four years with the Cleveland Browns before spending 2022 with the Carolina Panthers and Los Angeles Rams. Canales was the quarterback coach for the Seattle Seahawks last year and oversaw the competition between Geno Smith and Drew Lock. Philosophically, for me, coming from Seattle, (the) best guy gets the job. For me, it's a win-win when you create a competition," Canales said and stated the quarterbacks preparing as if they are the starter for six months makes the entire team better in the long term. Mayfield is viewed as the favorite to win the job by most analysts, but it's far from a guarantee at this point in the offseason.
