Bryan Shaw's Struggles Continue
7 years agoColorado Rockies reliever Bryan Shaw got called into a complete no-pressure situation on Tuesday and yet he still hurt the team, though it was partially not his fault. Trailing 4-1 in the eighth inning, Shaw came in and shut down the first three hitters he faced. Unfortunately, one of those actually reached first on a third strike that possibly could have been blocked by a better defensive catcher. That runner would go on to steal second and extend the inning long enough for Shaw to walk a man and give up a run-scoring single. He was bailed out by an outfield assist at that point, but the run he allowed ended up being the deciding factor when Colorado made a late comeback of three runs in the top of the ninth. Shaw has now allowed runs in eight of his last 11 appearances, and he's sitting at a 7.09 ERA for the year. While he's recently told reporters that he's getting close to having it all right, the proof hasn't been in the pudding.
