Brett Sullivan Optioned To Clear Space For Gary Sanchez
1 year agoSan Diego Padres catcher Brett Sullivan has been optioned to Triple-A to make space for fellow backstop Gary Sanchez, who was signed by the club Monday night. Needless to say, it was a tough go for Sullivan in his first taste of big-league action this season. The 29-year-old hit just .170 with one homer and a .482 OPS across a rather small sample size of 49 plate appearances on the campaign. Unfortunately for the Padres, Sullivan isn't their only struggling catcher, as Austin Nola is hitting a putrid .131 with one homer and a .434 OPS across his 118 trips to the plate. All told, Padres catchers have combined to produce an MLB-worst .218 wOBA this season, hence the flier on Sanchez despite his own struggles in recent seasons.
