Braves Still Planning To Use Mark Melancon As Closer
5 years agoThe Atlanta Braves are still planning on using relief pitcher Mark Melancon as the closer to start next season, even after signing Will Smith on Thursday. Melancon, who also pitched for the Giants last year before coming over to Atlanta, had a 3.86 ERA and 11 saves in his 23 appearances for the Braves. He had his shaky moments in a Braves bullpen that was a weakness, but at least for now he's expected to open next year with the ninth-inning duties. Smith was one of the better closers in baseball in 2019 with a 2.76 ERA, 1.03 WHIP, 96 K's and 34 saves in 65 1/3 innings. He'll still be attractive late in drafts for holds, but he'll lose a lot of value if he's playing second fiddle to Melancon.
