Braves Lock Up First-Rounder Hurston Waldrep Under Slot Value
2 years agoThe Atlanta Braves signed first-round pitcher Hurston Waldrep to a $2,997,500 deal on Thursday. The slot value for the 24th overall pick in the MLB draft is $3,270,500. Waldrep has good stuff on the mound, but he can get in trouble at times with his command, thanks to a violent delivery. He had double-digit strikeouts in seven of his 19 starts in his final year at the University of Florida after transferring from Southern Mississippi. The 21-year-old right-hander relies mostly on a fastball-splitter combination. He lands with one of the best teams in baseball as far as pitcher development, so if Waldrep can find more consistent control and command of his arsenal, he could be a quick riser through the Braves' farm system in the coming years.
