Braves Claim Yonny Chirinos Off Waivers
1 year agoThe Atlanta Braves claimed right-hander Yonny Chirinos off waivers from the Tampa Bay Rays on Sunday, and he'll be used as a starter with his new team. Chirinos pitched effectively in three of the four starts he made for the Rays this year and pitched into the sixth inning in each of those starts. In a corresponding move to make room for Chirinos on the roster, right-hander Michael Soroka was optioned to the minors. In 15 appearances for Tampa this year, Chirinos had a 4.02 ERA (5.52 FIP), 1.24 WHIP, 20 walks and 31 strikeouts in 62 2/3 innings pitched. The 29-year-old may see a start this week, but it remains to be seen how many more starts he'll make with the Braves once lefty Max Fried (forearm) returns soon from the injured list.
