Brandon Workman, Matt Barnes Post Scoreless Innings
5 years agoBoston Red Sox relief pitcher Brandon Workman pitched a perfect inning in Sunday's extra-inning loss to the Dodgers. The 30-year-old needed just 16 pitches to punch out all three hitters he faced. Workman has allowed just two runs in his last 16 2/3 innings of work. He's 8-1 on the year with a 1.74 ERA and 1.02 WHIP in 41 1/2 innings. Matt Barnes also worked a scoreless inning on Sunday, despite giving up a base hit. It marked his fourth consecutive scoreless appearance after capping off a dreadful June where he allowed 14 earned runs. Boston has continued to utilize a closer-by-committee between Workman, Barnes, and Ryan Brasier, however, it hasn't proved effective. Nathan Eovaldi (elbow) should return from the injured list around the end of July, at which time he is supposed to take over as the Red Sox closer. He can be added if you're in desperate need for saves, while the other three will only hold value in leagues where the "Hold" is counted.
