Brandon Phillips To Work Out At First Base
6 years agoBoston Red Sox manager Alex Cora said second baseman Brandon Phillips will start working out at first base. The veteran hit a two-run, game-winning homer to help beat the Braves 9-8 in an epic comeback on Wednesday. The 37-year-old has mostly played second base in his 17-year career, but he's made 24 starts at third base and two starts at shortstop. First baseman Mitch Moreland has hit .183 with a .594 OPS in 33 games since the All-Star break while battling through injuries. Phillips hit .302 with an .824 OPS at Triple-A Pawtucket before his call-up. He's probably still a long shot to make the team's postseason roster, but he has several weeks to prove he's worthy. Phillips still probably isn't anything more than AL-only depth to close out the season.
