Brandon McCarthy To Retire After Season
6 years agoAtlanta Braves veteran starting pitcher Brandon McCarthy (knee) said he has decided to retire after the 2018 season. He will spend the next few weeks making mechanical adjustments so that he can potentially boost the bullpen for the stretch run. The right-hander is 6-3 with a 4.92 ERA on the season in 15 starts. He can be dropped if you were hanging onto him for a potential return, as he won't have any value pitching in relief. "If I go out there and just [look mediocre], then there is no reason to activate me because it just cost someone else a roster spot," McCarthy said. "If I'm not getting outs, what's the point of doing that for a month? But if I feel like I can go out and be good and take up innings, then it absolutely makes sense." McCarthy was encouraged after throwing a 40-pitch bullpen session on Tuesday. He has lowered his arm slot and locked his right knee while making less aggressive separation from the rubber to lessen the strain on his knee.
