Blue Jays Stretching Out Julian Merryweather
4 years agoAfter seeing only modest returns from the free-agent pitching market, the Blue Jays organization is stretching out a number of pitchers in an effort to cover valuable innings. Of those arms, Julian Merryweather arguably has the highest ceiling due to his four-pitch mix which includes a fastball that can hit triple digits. Originally acquired from Cleveland for Josh Donaldson, the 29-year-old hurler's career had previously been stalled due to injuries. He's pitched just 19 innings since the end of 2017 and that includes the 13 innings he threw in eight MLB games in 2020. In that small sample size, Merryweather generated a barrel rate of just 2.9% with a 27.3% strikeout rate and a .290 xSLG, which was well below the league average of .414.
