Blake Snell: A Gamble Worth Taking
17 hours agoSnell tried his hand at free agency again this offseason and it paid dividends for him this time, as the lanky lefty inked a five-year, $182 million dollar deal with the Dodgers. Snell was fantastic last season—when he played, that is. Snell put up an incredible 12.55 K/9, 3.12 ERA, and 2.43 FIP, but he only pitched 104 innings between injured list stints. Isn't that the rub with Snell? He's made 30 or more starts just twice in his career, but he won the Cy Young both times. Even at 32 Snell is showing strong velocity and movement on his pitches and shows no signs of slowing down. So, where do we draft him, then? It comes down to risk tolerance and how one manages their team, but for savvy managers it may be worth taking the risk. Snell has SP1 upside when he's right, and savvy managers know how to stream starters effectively when he's out. His new team may be of concern, as the Dodgers tend to play it safe with their starters when it comes to injuries, but when he's out there we can trust Snell. He's currently going around pick 50 in NFBC drafts, which is fair value for Snell.
