Baker Mayfield's Extension Talks Could Stretch Into Season
4 years agoThe Cleveland Browns and quarterback Baker Mayfield's agents haven't had substantive contract-extension talks, so work on a new deal could stretch into October. There is no sense of urgency on either side to get something done before training camp or the start of the season because they know it will happen. The Browns have already picked up Mayfield's fifth-year option worth $18.858 million for 2022 and Cleveland is also working on other extensions. Extensions for draft classmates Josh Allen and Lamar Jackson will likely factor into the equation as well. Mayfield was the second-highest rated QB in the final seven games of last season, per Pro Football Focus. While the former No. 1 overall pick will have some QB1 weeks, he's more of a QB2 target due to Cleveland's heavy commitment to the running game.
