Matthews would find the back of the net on the power play in the opening frame. Over his past three contests, Matthews has found the back of the net four times, including three times on the power play. Before this stretch, the 27-year-old tallied 10 points over his last nine games, but only two of them were goals. However, during this stint, he averaged an impressive 4.1 shots on goal per game. Through 53 total games this season, Matthews has scored 27 goals and added 34 helpers while averaging 4.1 shots on goal per game. 2 months agoToronto Maple Leafs center Auston Matthews reached his season-best point streak on Sunday, extending it to nine games by logging a goal and an assist in the 6-5 victory over the Pittsburgh Penguins. He potted the team's third goal and landed an assist when William Nylander scored the game-winner with a minute played in the extra frame. With his 390th career goal, Matthews broke a tie for second with Darryl Sittler on Toronto's all-time goals list. He now trails only Mats Sundin (420). Despite putting together a nine-game point streak, Matthews has been surprisingly quiet in front of the net lately, scoring only twice during the run. He has had 11 assists since starting the streak. For the season overall, the Maple Leafs superstar boasts 51 points (22 goals, 29 assists) through 45 outings.--Taavi Pailk - RotoBaller

4 months agoToronto Maple Leafs center Auston Matthews (upper body) will return to the lineup on Saturday against Boston. The Maple Leafs finally get their leading man back after Matthews sat out six games due to a recurrence of an upper-body injury. Matthews is just short of averaging a point per game for the season, sitting on 11 goals and 12 assists through 24 appearances. He was riding a four-game point streak before landing on the shelf. The star forward will take over as the first-line center from John Tavares, with Matthew Knies and Mitchell Marner as his wingers. Tavares drops to the second line while David Kampf lands back on the fourth.--Taavi Pailk - RotoBaller
