Toronto Maple Leafs center Auston Matthews (shoulder) has been officially ruled out for the Leafs Saturday contest against the Pittsburgh Penguins. The timetable for his recovery is unclear, although there is a possibility the Maple Leafs may keep him off the ice longer than necessary. Toronto has a firm grasp on third place in the Atlantic Division and likely will not lose it regardless of their performance down the stretch. It is conceivable that the Leafs coaching staff may choose to hold Matthews out of the lineup to allow him more rest and recovery before the playoffs begin, even if it is only for an extra game or two. Matthews has been a leader for Toronto in his second season, earning a team-high 28 goals and plus-23 plus/minus. Be ready for updates to the young star’s status through the weekend. After Saturday, the Maple Leafs will play again on Wednesday night when they host the Dallas Stars.--Alex McKenzie
