The Oakland Athletics optioned outfielder JJ Bleday to Triple-A Las Vegas on Sunday. Bleday is headed for some more minor-league seasoning to begin the 2023 season, but he'll surely be up with the A's at some point this year. He was acquired from the Miami Marlins in the offseason in the deal that sent left-hander A.J. Puk to the Marlins. In 11 Cactus League games with Oakland, Bleday hit .286 with a home run and a stolen base. The 25-year-old former fourth overall pick in 2019 hit a disappointing .167/.277/.309 with a .586 OPS, five home runs, 16 RBI, 21 runs scored and four stolen bases in his first 65 major-league games in 2022 with the Fish. Bleday's prospect status has surely taken a hit, but he'll eventually get another chance in Oakland.--Keith Hernandez - RotoBaller

Athletics outfielder JJ Bleday went 1-for-4 with a two-run shot during Thursday's victory over the Chicago White Sox. Bleday would hit his second long ball of the campaign in the sixth inning off Chicago starter Davis Martin. His home run also scored Brent Rooker. Since posting a modest .167/.302/.194 slash line with a double and one RBI across the first 10 games of the campaign, Bleday has begun to turn the corner. Over his previous eight contests, the 27-year-old has posted a stellar .300/.353/.567 slash line with two doubles and two home runs. Under the hood, Bleday has shown a strong eye at the plate, drawing walks at a 13.0 percent rate and striking out at an 18.2 percent rate, which are both well above the average marks. Bleday remains a solid depth outfielder in all formats, given his everyday role.--Andy Smith - RotoBaller

Athletics outfielder JJ Bleday turned in a big game in a 10-4 win over the San Diego Padres on Tuesday. Bleday went 2-for-3 with a double, a homer, a walk, three runs, and three RBI to help power his team to the win. The veteran outfielder kicked off the scoring for the A's with a two-run double in the bottom of the first inning and followed that up with a solo homer in the seventh inning. Bleday will hope his big day will get his bat going as he is off to a slow start this season, hitting just .209 with one homer, nine runs, and four RBI through 43 at-bats.--Matt T - RotoBaller

The Athletics said at the winter meetings that they will not trade designated hitter Brent Rooker, and center fielder JJ Bleday also falls into that category, according to a source briefed on the team's thinking. The A's desperately want to add plays as they transition to playing their home games in a minor-league stadium in Sacramento in 2025, but they are also reluctant to trade the few quality players they have. Star closer Mason Miller perhaps could be on the trade block, but the A's would want a quality position player under long-term control in return. The Athletic's Ken Rosenthal wrote earlier this year that if the San Diego Padres wanted Miller, the A's likely would have asked for outfielder Jackson Merrill. The A's are deep in outfield prospects, but they're looking for immediate big-league help, which the rest of the league is also doing.--Keith Hernandez - RotoBaller

Oakland Athletics outfielders JJ Bleday and Seth Brown and infielder Max Schuemann are all out of the starting lineup in Wednesday's series finale against the Chicago Cubs at Wrigley Field with a left-hander on the mound. As a result, Daz Cameron will start in center field and bat cleanup, Tyler Nevin will man left field and hit eighth, and Nick Allen will start at the hot corner and hit ninth against Cubs left-hander Justin Steele, who is making his first start off the injured list. Bleday has hit a pedestrian .246 (133-for-540) in his third year in the big leagues in 2024, but he has quietly hit the 20-homer mark and driven in 56 runs in 149 games for a bad A's team. He's hit .229 (25-for-109) with six of his 20 long balls on the year against southpaws. Cameron has the most DFS upside in the four-hole, but he's hit just .201 with five homers and five steals in 159 at-bats.--Keith Hernandez - RotoBaller
