Aroldis Chapman Getting Comfortable With Splitter
4 years agoNew York Yankees closer Aroldis Chapman is getting more comfortable with his split-fingered fastball this spring. Chapman has relied upon his four-seam fastball-slider combo while using a changeup and splitter sparingly over the years, though he's intent on adding the latter pitch to his arsenal. One American League scout said the pitch looks "nasty"- noting that it will help Chapman against right-handed hitters, given its down-and-away movement. The 33-year-old missed some time in 2020 because of COVID-19, though he still had the same strong stuff, posting a 22-4 strikeout-to-walk ratio. In his last two full seasons, Chapman averaged 34 saves with a 2.33 ERA over 54 innings. Fantasy managers who invest at his 71 ADP should expect similar numbers in 2021, especially with a potentially nasty new pitch in his repertoire.
