Anthony Bender Up To 18 Scoreless Appearances
3 years agoMiami Marlins rookie relief pitcher Anthony Bender pitched another scoreless inning in Tuesday's loss to the St. Louis Cardinals. The 26-year-old rookie has now thrown 17 2/3 scoreless innings to begin his big league career, with 22 strikeouts. The 0.00 ERA is fun to look at, but the 0.74 WHIP and 1.68 FIP both show that he's actually been amazing. Bender is very likely the best pitcher in the Marlins bullpen, but he'll keep pitching in middle relief while pitch-to-contact guys like Dylan Floro and Anthony Bass keep throwing in higher leverage, later game situations. Bender could work his way into the closer's role as soon as Don Mattingly gets fired.
