Anthony Bender Gets Five Outs On Sunday
3 years agoMiami Marlins rookie relief pitcher Anthony Bender pitched 1 2/3 scoreless innings on Sunday, facing just four batters and recording a strikeout. Bender came into the fifth inning with two runners on base but induced a double play and then pitched a perfect sixth inning. Bender has now thrown 19 1/3 innings and has yet to allow a run while striking out 23 and posting a 0.67 WHIP. You'd think that would earn him innings more significant than the fifth, but as is the case with almost all of the head-scratching Marlins moves: Don Mattingly manages the team. Bender has been an excellent find for the Marlins and could be the closer of the future, as long as the Marlins move on from the stubborn Mattingly during or after this season.
