Andrew Chafin Returns To Detroit
2 months agoThe Detroit Tigers signed free-agent left-hander Andrew Chafin to a minor-league deal on Monday that includes a non-roster invite to major-league spring training. Chafin began last year with the Tigers but also spent time with the Texas Rangers. The 34-year-old veteran southpaw reliever had a combined 4-3 record, 3.51 ERA (3.54 FIP), a 1.47 WHIP, one save, a career-high 70 strikeouts and 31 walks in 56 1/3 innings out of the bullpen. He was better with Detroit, sporting a 3.16 ERA, 1.38 WHIP, 50 strikeouts and 16 walks in 37 relief innings. If Chafin makes the big-league bullpen, he'll provide additional left-handed relief depth alongside Tyler Holton and Sean Guenther. The best thing Chafin has boing for him is experience, having pitched in 11 major-league seasons while compiling 20 saves, a 3.42 ERA, 1.28 WHIP and 25.9% strikeout rate in 508 1/3 total innings.
