Andres Munoz Blows Save, Escapes With Win Tuesday
1 year agoSeattle Mariners relief pitcher Andres Munoz had an eventful evening in Tuesday's 10-8 extra-innings win over the Royals. Munoz came in to pitch the bottom of the eighth inning up by three with one out and runners on first and second. He immediately got the remaining two outs on a pop-out and groundout and stayed on to pitch the ninth. The first runner reached first base on an error, followed by a flyout and a walk. He got the second out on a groundout which advanced the runners to second and third, walked the bases loaded, allowed a two-RBI single, and then allowed the game-tying RBI in which the third out was made at third. Ultimately, the Mariners took and maintained the lead in the 10th, making Munoz the pitcher of record. The 24-year-old flamethrower appears to be the primary closer option now that Paul Sewald has been traded and has converted six of eight save opportunities with a 2.78 ERA, a 12.25 K/9 rate, and a 4.45 BB/9 rate. As such, he is worth a roster spot in at least all roto leagues at this time.
