4 years agoLos Angeles Kings forward Andreas Athanasiou made it three goals in three games in Tuesday's 3-2 loss to Colorado, becoming only the third player in franchise history to score in all of his first three regular season games for the team. Bill Lesuk did it first in 1971-72 and some guy named Wayne Gretzky managed it in 1988-89. Adrian Kempe scored a power-play goal in the contest, while Anze Kopitar finished with two assists. Athanasiou had an awful year last season, but he is a former 30-goal scorer and it looks like he's capable of reaching the mark again in 2020-21. Gretzky started his Kings career with a four-game goal-scoring streak, and Athanasiou will be aiming to repeat the feat against Colorado on Thursday.--Taavi Pailk - RotoBaller

1 year agoChicago Blackhawks forward Andreas Athanasiou helped to set up two goals as the team shocked the Maple Leafs with a 4-1 road victory on Monday. Following a scoreless first period, Athanasiou helped MacKenzie Entwistle open the scoring early in the second frame and had a power-play assist on a Tyler Johnson strike later in the period. This was a very productive performance from Athanasiou, as he logged only 11:45 of ice time on the fourth line. His performance also included three shots on goal and two blocks as he finished the contest with a plus-one rating. Athanasiou has dropped down in the lineup this season, but he's still getting power-play time and has enjoyed a decent start to the campaign with three points in four outings.--Taavi Pailk - RotoBaller

2 years agoChicago Blackhawks forward Andreas Athanasiou has received a two-year extension from the club that pays him $8.5 million. The 28-year-old was heading toward unrestricted free agency before inking the new deal. Athanasiou earned himself a nice pay rise off a strong finish to the season, as he was on a one-year, $3 million deal. The speedy forward collected 20 points in the final 24 games of the 2022-23 regular season and finished the campaign with 20 goals and 40 points in 81 games overall. Athanasiou is a strong candidate to accompany Connor Bedard on the first line during his rookie season and it puts him in a great spot to produce a career year.--Taavi Pailk - RotoBaller

2 years agoChicago Blackhawks winger Andreas Athanasiou had his first three-point game of the season and produced a game-high eight shots on goal in Friday's 4-3 overtime win against Arizona. He scored the team's second goal early in the second period and had two assists, including one of Caleb Jones's game-winner. Athanasiou has started his best spell of the season by bagging six points in seven games. He was only on 12 points for the campaign before the run started, so it's been a major improvement from the 28-year-old speedster. However, the season overall hasn't gone well for Athanasiou, as he has recorded only 11 goals and eight assists in 49 games.--Taavi Pailk - RotoBaller

2 years agoChicago Blackhawks forward Andreas Athanasiou scored the team's only two goals in a 5-2 loss against the St. Louis Blues on Wednesday. The 28-year-old winger was on a six-game goalless drought coming into tonight, but managed to sneak two past Blues netminder Jordan Binnington, one of which came on the powerplay. Athanasiou is up to five goals and three assists in 16 games this season. That comes out to exactly a half a point-per-game pace, which is remarkably close to his career 0.52 PPG. This depth-scoring role is likely where he will stay, making him a decent streamer in points leagues. His lack of peripherals hurts his value in banger leagues, however.--Matt Garon - RotoBaller
