Alex Reyes' Role To Be Determined
6 years agoThe St. Louis Cardinals may decide to use pitching prospect Alex Reyes in a high-leverage bullpen role in order to protect his innings. Their long-time top prospect has been limited to four innings in the majors the last two years due to elbow and shoulder surgeries, and St. Louis expects him to be close to full speed by the time spring training starts in February. He's expected to be used as a starter, but the team's needs and his readiness could push him into a relief role. “We want to be smart about this,” said John Mozeliak, the team’s president of baseball operations. “We want to take a cautious approach to his spring training usage. See how he throws. See how he’s reacting. See how he feels, physically. Then determine if we’re going to put our foot on the gas.” Reyes has thrown 27 innings in the past 26 months due to injuries. So it makes sense why they want to be conservative with a pitcher that has incredible upside in the big leagues. Reyes has intrigue in mixed leagues, but probably only if he's in a starting role from the get go.
