Washington Capitals winger Alex Ovechkin tied Wayne Gretzky for the most goals in NHL history against the Chicago Blackhawks in a 5-3 win on Friday. The Capitals captain finished the contest with two goals, opening the scoring less than four minutes into the game and adding another one -- a power-play goal -- in the third period, with Gretzky watching from the stands. Ovechkin now has 894 regular-season goals through 1,486 career games, including 41 markers in 60 outings this season. The Russian superstar, who boasts 68 points for the campaign, has relentlessly chased Gretzky's record this season and will get his next opportunity to break it on Sunday against the New York Islanders. Ovechkin will enter the matchup with a four-game goal streak.--Taavi Pailk - RotoBaller

Washington Capitals winger Alex Ovechkin recorded three points, including his first career playoff overtime goal, in Monday's 3-2 overtime victory against the Montreal Canadiens. The NHL's all-time top goal-scorer opened his 2025 postseason campaign with a power-play goal in the first period, collected an assist in the second, and secured the victory for his team in the extra frame after Montreal erased a two-goal deficit inside the final 10 minutes of regulation. Ovechkin scored twice on four shots and registered a game-high seven hits while logging 16:45 of ice time. The Capitals captain enjoyed a prolific regular-season campaign and appears to have carried his form into the playoffs. Washington Capitals winger Alex Ovechkin became the NHL's all-time leading goal-scorer on Sunday with his 895th career goal in a 4-1 loss to the New York Islanders. The record-breaking goal came in the second period during a power-play situation. Ovechkin made history in his 1,487th career regular-season game, breaking a tie at the top of the goals chart with Wayne Gretzky, who held the goals record for 31 years. Teams have struggled to contain Ovechkin all year, as the Capitals captain now boasts 42 goals and 69 points in 61 games for the season. The Russian superstar has scored in five consecutive games, putting him only two away from matching his best-ever goal streak, which Ovechkin achieved during his rookie campaign in 2005-06.--Taavi Pailk - RotoBaller

Washington Capitals left wing Alex Ovechkin tallied two points during their 4-3 victory over the Boston Bruins on Tuesday evening. Ovechkin found the back of the net on the power play in the opening frame. This goal put him just four away from breaking Wayne Gretzky's all-time record. Later in the third, Ovechkin would add the secondary assist on Tom Wilson's 32nd goal of the campaign. Ovechkin has now scored in back-to-back games and scored three in his last four. Since March 1, Ovechkin has found the back of the net eight times and added 10 helpers across 15 contests. During this stretch, he has logged an impressive 50 shots on goal. Through 58 total games this season, the 39-year-old has scored 38 goals and tallied 27 assists. He remains a must-start player as he chases history.--Andy Smith - RotoBaller
