4 years agoWashington Capitals left wing Alex Ovechkin notched his 717th career regular season goal in Monday's 6-0 win over Buffalo, tying Phil Esposito for sixth place on the NHL's all-time goal-scoring list. Ovi had a game-high six shots and found the back of the net 16:21 into the third period. He finished with a plus-three rating in 20:04 on the ice. The Capitals captain entered the contest at minus-nine, so he's had some trouble playing effective hockey in even-strength situations this season. Ovechkin has 11 goals for the year in 24 games, and he'll head into Tuesday's big clash with the Islanders on a three-game goal streak. Marcel Dionne (731) and Brett Hull (741) are the next targets for the Russian veteran on the all-time goals list.--Taavi Pailk - RotoBaller

1 month agoWashington Capitals left wing Alex Ovechkin found the back of the net during their 4-3 victory over the Philadelphia Flyers. Ovechkin scored in the first frame on a snap shot that beat Flyers netminder Ivan Fedotov. This goal extended his goal-scoring streak to an impressive four games. During this four-game stretch, Ovechkin has tallied six points (four goals, two helpers), 3.5 shots on goal per game, three hits per game, and one blocked shot. Ovechkin is also just 16 goals away from surpassing Wayne Gretzky. Over his previous 12 contests, Ovechkin has tallied 10 points (seven goals and three helpers). Fantasy managers should continue to view the 39-year-old as an elite goal-scoring producer. He will look to stay hot on Sunday when the Capitals host the Utah Hockey Club.--Andy Smith - RotoBaller

3 months agoWashington Capitals winger Alex Ovechkin (lower leg) will return to action on Saturday versus Toronto. The Capitals captain is ready for action again five weeks after breaking his left fibula. Following his lengthy absence, Ovechkin might need a bit of time to find his feet, but he looked spectacular early in the campaign. The veteran star has recorded 15 goals and 25 points in 18 outings this season. He needs to light the lamp 27 more times to break Wayne Gretzky's legendary goal-scoring record, and Ovechkin will have 48 games to do it. Dylan Strome and Aliaksei Protas will be partnered with Ovechkin on the first line on Saturday.--Taavi Pailk - RotoBaller

3 months agoWashington Capitals winger Alex Ovechkin (lower leg) was back on the ice Monday. He had a light skate two weeks after fracturing his left fibula. The Russian superstar is expected to be out for 4-6 weeks, and it looks like his rehab is going well. Tuesday's clash with San Jose will mark the seventh straight game without Ovechkin for the Capitals. They have done fine without him so far, going 4-2-0. Ovechkin exited the lineup as the league's leading goal-scorer, having lit the lamp 15 times in 18 games. He's 27 goals short of surpassing Wayne Gretzky's all-time record. Tom Wilson and Connor McMichael have stepped into top-line roles during Ovechkin's absence, giving them additional fantasy value.--Taavi Pailk - RotoBaller

4 months agoWashington Capitals winger Alex Ovechkin will be out for 4-6 weeks with a fractured fibula, the team announced on Thursday. Ovechkin suffered the injury in Monday's game against Utah. The veteran star has looked in great form this season, posting a league-high 15 goals with 10 assists in 18 games. He potted five goals across two games before getting hurt. The injury is a significant setback for Ovechkin's pursuit of breaking Wayne Gretzky's all-time goals record this season, and it's obviously bad news for the team as well. Andrew Mangiapane will replace Ovechkin on the first line in Thursday's matchup against Colorado.--Taavi Pailk - RotoBaller
