3 years agoToronto Blue Jays starting pitcher Alek Manoah was dominant in his 2022 debut against the New York Yankees on Monday. The 24-year-old pitched six scoreless innings, allowing one hit and four walks while striking out seven. Manoah had been prioritizing his changeup this offseason and the improved pitch was on full display on Monday. He threw the pitch 16.9% of the time and it generated a 57.1% whiff rate. Last year, he threw the pitch 9.4% of the time and it had a whiff rate of just 13%. His four-seam fastball remained his most heavily-utilized pitch on Monday as he threw it 34.8% of the time at an average velocity of 94.4 mph (up from 93.7 mph last year). The second-year pro will look to build off his strong debut in his next trip to the mound on Saturday against the Oakland Athletics.--Andrew Ericksen - RotoBaller
