AJ Smith-Shawver Sent To The Minors
2 years agoThe Atlanta Braves optioned right-handed rookie AJ Smith-Shawver to Triple-A Gwinnett after Sunday's game and recalled right-hander Dereck Rodriguez from the minors on Monday in a corresponding move. Smith-Shawver didn't pitch poorly in his first four major-league appearances (three starts), allowing eight runs (five earned) on 13 hits (five homers surrendered) while walking six and striking out 15 in 16 2/3 innings, but he's thrown only 19 innings above Double-A and could use more minor-league seasoning. The 20-year-old could be back in the big leagues again at some point in the second half, but fantasy managers shouldn't expect him to have a huge role down the stretch. It's likely that Michael Soroka takes Smith-Shawver's next turn in the rotation on Wednesday against the Minnesota Twins.
