Adalberto Mondesi's Playing Time Is Unclear
6 years agoKansas City Royals top prospect Adalberto Mondesi smacked a double off Bartolo Colon on Monday to record his first major league hit of the season. Called up before Sunday's game, the 22-year-old is KC's obvious future, but manager Ned Yost told reporters that there's no commitment by the team as to when or how much he'll start. Mondesi is being held back by long-time shortstop Alcides Escobar, but it seems that's mostly just because Yost is so dedicated to veterans, as Escobar is hitting just .206 and in the middle of a 2-for-41 slump. To be fair, Mondesi hasn't put a ton of pressure on Esky this season, as he was only hitting .250 with five home runs at Triple-A this year. Mondesi has cut way down on his strikeouts, which was an obvious issue last season, and his power/speed combo is still tantalizing, but the playing-time issue may be a season-long one.
