49ers Sign Chris Thompson To Practice Squad
3 years agoThe San Francisco 49ers signed running back Chris Thompson and defensive lineman Eddie Yarbrough to their practice squad on Wednesday. The team released tight end Jordan Matthews from the practice squad in a corresponding move. Other than the Baltimore Ravens, the Niners have the most beat up backfield in the league with Raheem Mostert out for the rest of the season, Jeff Wilson Jr. sidelined and JaMycal Hasty dealing with a high ankle sprain. Rookies Elijah Mitchell (shoulder) and Trey Sermon (concussion) also suffered injuries in Week 2, leaving Trenton Cannon and the recently signed Jacques Patrick as the only healthy RBs on the active roster. Thompson, 30, can contribute in the passing game on third downs, but he hasn't played more than 11 games a season since 2016. There's opportunity in this backfield, but Thompson is only a deep-league PPR flier for running back depth for now.
