RotoBaller PGA Expert Roundtable - Arnold Palmer Invitational
The Expert Roundtable is an attempt to get you inside the mind of our PGA staff for every tournament. Our four top golf writers - Joe Nicely, Spencer Aguiar, Josh Bennett, and Tommy Bell - will answer the same set of questions each week to give you an idea of how they are viewing the PGA DFS slate. Let's tee it up for the Arnold Palmer Invitational!
Who is your favorite DFS value play?
- Joe Nicely: Carlos Ortiz ($7,100)
- Spencer Aguiar: Keegan Bradley ($7,000)
- Josh Bennett: Brendon Todd ($6,900)
- Tommy Bell: Taylor Gooch ($7,000) - or Abraham Ancer ($7,800) if he's "value" enough
Who is your favorite DFS “high priced” play?
- Joe Nicely: Rory McIlroy
- Spencer Aguiar: No real preference (I realize that doesn't answer the question, but I can make a strong case for every option priced above $10k)
- Josh Bennett: Xander Schauffele
- Tommy Bell: Bryson DeChambeau
Who is your top GPP play?
- Joe Nicely: Byeong Hun An
- Spencer Aguiar: Tony Finau
- Josh Bennett: Justin Rose
- Tommy Bell: Bubba Watson
Who is your top Cash-Game play?
- Joe Nicely: Tyrell Hatton
- Spencer Aguiar: Henrik Stenson
- Josh Bennett: Henrik Stenson
- Tommy Bell: Abraham Ancer
Which popular golfer will you be “fading”?
- Joe Nicely: Xander Schauffele
- Spencer Aguiar: Sebastian Munoz (I am fine letting a $6,900 golfer that is projected to get 12% ownership beat me)
- Josh Bennett: Tommy Fleetwood
- Tommy Bell: Adam Scott
What stands out as the most important stat for this golf course?
- Joe Nicely: SG: Approach, Proximity from 200+ yards
- Spencer Aguiar: SG: Approach, Proximity from 200+ yards
- Josh Bennett: SG: Approach
- Tommy Bell: SG: Approach
Who is your favorite DFS “dart throw”?
- Joe Nicely: Patrick Rodgers ($6,600)
- Spencer Aguiar: Cameron Champ ($6,900)
- Josh Bennett: Xinjun Zhang ($6,200)
- Tommy Bell: Keith Mitchell (Here we go again!)
What is your favorite bet of the week? (Any type)
- Joe Nicely:Carlos Ortiz Outright - +10,000 & Maverick McNealy FRL - +10,000
- Spencer Aguiar: Sungjae Im (+101) over Patrick Reed
- Josh Bennett:Brendon Todd Top-20 (+600)
- Tommy Bell: Billy Horschel Outright (+6,600)
Make a “bold prediction” for this week:
Joe Nicely: Tommy Fleetwood records a runner-up finish for the second week in a row
Spencer Aguiar: The winner of the tournament will have finished outside 50th place in his previous start
Josh Bennett: Trying this one again...Tommy Fleetwood breaks his made cut streak by missing this week
Tommy Bell: No one in the $9-9.9k price range places in the Top 10
Who is your favorite overall DFS golfer and why?
Joe Nicely: Rory McIlroy - This may seem like a no-brainer, but it's not often that I'm willing to spend $11.8k on a player. Rory brings an elite combination of talent, current form, and course history to the table this week.
Spencer Aguiar: Tony Finau - Solid cash-game option that has more upside than people realize.
Josh Bennett: Xander Schauffele - May go underowned in a full-field event. Great course for him and should mitigate his recent putting issues.
Tommy Bell: Billy Horschel - Had a rough showing at the Honda last week and his price has nose-dived as a result. He's still one of the best Florida players on Tour, putts well on Bermuda, and can get hot in an instant. He'll be a staple again for me this week.
What is your optimal DFS lineup building strategy?
Joe Nicely: Stars & Scrubs due to Rory at the top, viable value options, and this event’s smaller field size
Spencer Aguiar: I wouldn’t argue against any strategy. Pricing is pushing towards this being a balanced build spot, but I don’t think it is a necessity. If you like someone at the top, you can deviate elsewhere.
Josh Bennett: Stars and scrubs again. Tons of value in the low 7ks and 6ks. Can easily get two very good players in one lineup
Tommy Bell: 1 player 10k and up, 2 players 8k, and fill in with your favorite value guys.
Who is your pick to win the tournament?
- Joe Nicely: Rory McIlroy
- Spencer Aguiar: Brooks Koepka
- Josh Bennett: Xander Schauffele
- Tommy Bell: Bryson DeChambeau with Tommy Fleetwood a close second
