Analysis: Arizona Diamondbacks prospect Peter O'Brien has a pretty standard M.O. at the plate. Swing really hard, and either strikeout or hit a HR. That will likely be his approach when he is called up to the big leagues. He has had just 19 MLB AB, and hit .263/.333/.632 with two HR with a total isolated power figure of .368. So what is the drawback to O'Brien's "Roy Nelson Haymaker" style at the plate that has yielded a 9.5% HR percentage? In limited time last season O'Brien had a 41.7% strikeout percentage, and this year he is striking out 55.6% of the time. However, he was raking in Triple-A Reno this season before his call-up. O'Brien had a slash line of .330/.356/.670 and hit 17 HR in just 212 AB. O'Brien may strike out frequently, but he isn't a Stephen Drew-type who will hit 20 HR and bat .190. He is very competent at the plate, he just happens to hit with extreme power. Playing his home games in HR-friendly Chase Field should help further his value.
