BALLER MOVE: Target Mid to Late in All Leagues
ANALYSIS: Pedro Alvarez was a monster in 2013. In 2014, eh not so much. Not only did Alvarez struggle mightily at the plate, but his poor defensive performance eventually led to a change of position. Now a first basemen for the Pittsburgh Pirates, I’m hopeful the Big Bull can focus more on finding his swing in 2015 and less on fixing his errant throws.
If your league does not subtract points for strikeouts (most point leagues do), Alvarez’s value should jump a couple of rounds. Either way, I think he should be picked well before round 16, which is where he was chosen in my most recent head-to-head points draft. Still young, the first baseman is very capable of finding his 30-homer groove again. When he does, you’re going to want him on your team. I found that he fits nicely into a utility or corner infield spot instead of your primary first roster spot. That way you don’t get burned if he fails to produce or falls into a platoon again this year.
