Fantasy Baseball Impact Of The Giants Signing Paul DeJong
The San Francisco Giants have reportedly signed infielder Paul DeJong to a Major League deal, per a tweet from USA Today’s Bob Nightengale on Tuesday. Nightengale tweeted the following:
The 30-year-old DeJong has hit .211 with a .269 on-base percentage in 350 plate appearances this season, splitting his time between the St. Louis Cardinals and Toronto Blue Jays. Overall, the infielder has also added 13 home runs and four stolen bases in the process.
Traded by St. Louis to the Blue Jays prior to the deadline, the veteran hit just .068 in 44 plate appearances with the American League East club before being designated for assignment. He’s now reportedly heading to San Francisco, where he’ll give the Giants another option at shortstop.
With Brandon Crawford on the injured list, the National League West franchise has mostly utilized Johan Camargo at the position. The former Atlanta infielder is batting .235 with a .316 on-base percentage and two RBI in 19 plate appearances.
He’s found more success in the minors this year, batting .260 with a .339 on-base percentage and eight home runs in 165 plate appearances split between the Triple-A affiliates of the Giants, Tigers, and Royals.
And while Camargo does own a .369 xwOBA in a tiny sample size in the Majors this season, there’s every chance that DeJong could step into a regular role in the short term here. Of course, that’s all entirely speculative, but if he can step into a starting role, there’s certainly streaming potential here for fantasy managers in deeper leagues.
