The NBA, NCAA, and NABC (National Association of Basketball Coaches) have collaborated on a proposal that they believe will keep college basketball students in school longer as opposed to prematurely fleeing to the NBA.
Under the new plan, prospective NBA players (including international players) would be given the opportunity to be invited to a combine in mid-May. NBA coaches would attend this combine and give feedback on each players draft potential.
The deadlines to declare eligible and to withdraw from the draft will remain the same.
Coaches believe that if a player is not invited to the combine, it should give him a strong indication that he should stay in school. Additionally, if they are invited to the combine, they’ll get a better idea of how they will be looked at in the NBA. This too could give the players incentive to stay in school if they aren’t happy with their draft stock.
This could benefit basketball at the college and professional level. If more players stay in college, there will be more talent and the NBA will receive more immediate talent as well.
Many high profile coaches were involved in this matter, including Mike Krzyzewski, John Calipari, John Thompson III, and Tom Izzo. If passed, the plan could go into effect by the 2016 draft.
