ANALYSIS: After a pair of subpar seasons to begin his professional career, Nelson Agholor worked hard this past preseason to turn things around, and his performance in Week 1 was promising. The 23-year-old Nigerian wideout had a dream start to his year, bringing down a 58-yard Carson Wentz pass for a touchdown just three minutes into the game. It was only the beginning for Agholor, as he would wind up with six catches for 86 yards, both career highs.
The talk from his teammates and coaches is all about Agholor’s newfound confidence and how it will ultimately play out on the gridiron. Being targeted eight times, a team high for wide receivers, he faces stiff competition to keep those numbers high. With Alshon Jeffery and Torrey Smith on the roster, Agholor could be seen as a number three option. Considering he’s the only one of the trio with a year of experience working with Carson Wentz, that could play in his favor. Perhaps the best sign for the USC product on Sunday was his zero passes dropped.
Agholor’s potential to play the full season, something he didn’t do his first two years, further increases his chances of being a consistent performer. The promise of Week 1, coupled with all the aforementioned details, and the fact that when asked who would break out for the club in 2017 numerous teammates picked him, sets Agholor up nicely the rest of the way. Look to add him in a bench role for now, knowing he could become increasingly active as we move forward.
