NBA Rookie Fantasy Profile: Dejounte Murray

In preparation for the 2016-17 Fantasy Basketball season, it's time to get to know some of the new guys in the player pool.  The 2015 draft brought in a massive influx of fantasy relevant NBA talent, from a burgeoning super-star at the top of the draft (Minnesota's Karl-Anthony Towns) to a hidden jewel in the middle of the 2nd round (Miami's Josh Richardson).  While this draft doesn't have as much guaranteed talent in the lottery, it does feature its own star at the top and a depth of intriguing players who could make an impact from out of the 2nd round.

The Spurs are one of the luckiest teams during the NBA Draft every season. They always seem to have some top prospect fall to them because they aren't quite NBA ready. That happened again this season, and Dejounte Murray left Washington after only one season. He clearly isn't ready to play in the NBA, but he could have been selected in the top-10 based on potential alone. Obviously, that did not happen, and he fell to the Spurs, where he will be groomed to become their point guard of the future.

NBA Rookie Fantasy Profile: Dejounte Murray

Position: PG

Team: San Antonio Spurs

Draft Spot: 1.29

Analysis: Murray is a player that may have come to the NBA a bit early. He showed flashes at Washington during his freshman campaign, but he also showed that he needed to improve quite a bit. With that being said, he is oozing with potential, and he’s another high upside pick that fell into the lap of the Spurs late in the first round.

Murray likely won’t crack the Spurs rotation this season, as they have multiple guys that are capable of running the offense, including Tony Parker and Patty Mills. He flashed in the Summer League, but that hasn’t been enough for the Spurs to automatically give players minutes during the regular season. If he does crack the rotation, he could produce in a few categories, but ultimately, he’ll likely be an inefficient player.

Murray is one of the highest upside players in this NBA Draft. There were talks that he would go in the top-10 based on his potential alone, but ultimately, that didn’t work out. He’s a couple years away from becoming an important piece of the Spurs rotation, but Murray is a do-it-all type of player, as he averaged 16.1 points, 6.0 rebounds, 4.4 assists, and 1.8 steals in 33.5 minutes per game at Washington. He is going to need to work on his jump shot, and if he can become a consistent three-point shooter, Murray, in that San Antonio system, could be one of the top fantasy point guards in the NBA in a few years.

Bottom Line: If given playing time, he could immediately produce points, assists, steals, and rebounds. Will struggle with minutes and efficiency early in his career. Not worth drafting in re-draft leagues.
