Chicago Cubs @ New York Mets
O/U: 9 | Moneyline: NYM -110
CHC: Jake Arrieta | NYM: David Peterson
One of the hottest teams in baseball heads to the Big Apple for a showdown of first-place teams on Monday, as the Cubs meet the Mets. They'll send Jake Arrieta to the mound, and although he isn't the Jake Arrieta of old, he's been fairly decent this season. The Mets have been average at best against right-handed pitching this season, sporting just a .463 wOBA + ISO, just over league average.
Arrieta will match up against left-hander David Peterson. I was high on him coming into this season, and he's disappointed me greatly. He's been very poor in his last two times out, allowing nine earned runs in just three innings against the Diamondbacks and the Orioles. This is a poor indicator because the Cubs absolutely destroy left-handed pitching this season, sporting a .667 woBA + ISO against southpaws this year.
I'm a Phillies fan, but I'm objectively speaking here. The Mets are a solid baseball team, and probably the best team in the NL East. However, they're just 7-13 against teams with .500 or better records this season. They depend heavily on the top of their rotation, and Peterson just isn't one of those guys this year. I'm on the Cubbies.
Pick: Cubs Moneyline (-106), FanDuel Sportsbook
San Diego Padres @ Colorado Rockies
O/U: 11.5 | Moneyline: COL +130
SD: Dinelson Lamet | COL: Austin Gomber
It's never easy to say a pitcher has "figured out Coors". If there's one guy I'd say that about recently, it'd be Austin Gomber. Gomber has pitched extremely well this season, especially at home, allowing just three earned runs in over twenty innings at Coors this season. One of those starts did come against the Friars just a month ago, with Gomber going 5.1 innings and allowing just one run, and it wasn't earned. San Diego exploded for six runs in the seventh inning on Sunday, but sans that inning, they've only scored six runs in their last 44 innings.
Dinelson Lamet will take the mound for the Padres. They allowed him to extend his leash in his last start against the Cubs and it did backfire, but aside from that inning, he's been solid this season. He also pitched a few innings at Coors this season, allowing an earned run in two innings. However, no one on this Rockies team aside from Dom Nunez and Charlie Blackmon sees him well at all, so I do think he turns in a decent outing this evening.
I don't love taking unders at Coors, but I do think that there's good value here.
Pick: Under 11.5 (-110), FanDuel Sportsbook
Philadelphia Phillies @ Los Angeles Dodgers
O/U: 8.5 | Moneyline: LAD -172
PHI: Spencer Howard | LAD: Tony Gonsolin
A bit of a chalky line here, and I was really hoping we would see more value. The Phillies have turned it around, taking two against the Yankees over the weekend. They've won six of their last eight and seven of their last ten. They'll be hoping to carry this momentum as they begin a brutal west coast road trip against the Dodgers and Giants.
Spencer Howard takes the mound for the Phils tonight. He's been an interesting case as a starter this year, going no deeper than four innings. He throws 2-3 solid innings and then seems to hit a wall. On the other side, Tony Gonsolin had a rough start in his 2021 debut on Wednesday but was much better at home last season. I expect this trend to continue tonight.
The Phillies are hot, but are just 11-19 on the road, while the Dodgers are 20-11 at home. Despite the juice on the money line and me being a Phillies fan, I have to roll with the Dodgers here.
Pick: Dodgers ML (-172), FanDuel Sportsbook
