Happy Wednesday RotoBallers! John, aka 'LucidMedia," back with your MLB betting picks for this Wednesday, June 30th. I hope you all have had a great week so far, the weekend is almost here! We had a good Monday, going 3-1 with the Astros just barely ruining our sweep. We look to get back at it today during this matinee slate, and I'm looking at two games I see some value in to get us going into the weekend.
I will be doing these picks for you every Monday and Wednesday going forward this baseball season. Just to let you know, I mainly bet on FanDuel Sportsbook, and that's where the odds below will be coming from. Pittsburgh Pirates @ Colorado Rockies
O/U: 11.5 | Moneyline: COL -158
PIT: Chad Kuhl | COL: Jon Gray
The Pirates and the Rockies meet this afternoon in Coors for the final game of their series. The Rockies have taken the first two in the series, shutting out the Pirates, an incredible feat in Coors, in the first two games. Today they send Jon Gray out to the mount in the closing game. Gray was excellent in his first start after a three-week injury hiatus, going five strong and striking out ten in Milwaukee on Friday. This is a good indicator for the Rockies as Gray is actually better in Coors (4-2, 3.25 ERA) than he is on the road (0-4, 5.32).
The Pirates will be sending Chad Kuhl to the mound this afternoon. Kuhl is coming off back-to-back quality starts, with his last also coming against the meddling Cardinals, going six innings and allowing just one earned run. That start may have been on the road, but Kuhl has struggled on the road this year, dealing with a 1-3 record and 6.04 ERA away from home.
The Rockies are actually a solid team at home, especially of late, winning eight of the last ten. They've also won 10 of 12 at home against a right-handed starter, and I expect that trend to continue today. Back the Rockies at a decent price.
Pick: Rockies Moneyline (-158), FanDuel Sportsbook
Tampa Bay Rays @ Washington Nationals
O/U: 10 | Moneyline: WSH +102
TB: Michael Wacha (PLR)| WSH: Jon Lester
The Nationals are on an absolute scorcher of late, led by the power bat of Kyle Schwarber who's got 16 long balls in his last 18 games. The Nats have won 13 of 16 and have been absolutely dominant at home in that stretch. I could list all of the trends that are good indicators for the Nats, but that would take me about an hour. The most important ones I'm looking at though are that they're 7-0 in their last 7 against a right-handed starting pitcher, they're 4-0 in their last four interleague games at home against a team with a winning record, and that they seem to play well on Wednesdays as they're 6-0 in their last six on hump days.
The pitching matchup this afternoon is Michael Wacha, the projected long reliever for Tampa, against Jon Lester. Lester has been hot and cold all year, with a tough go-around last time out against Miami. However, Tampa Bay has really struggled against lefties this season, which is uncharacteristic of them. They come into this one with just a +20.6% hard-to-soft contact rate against southpaws and have lost five straight when a lefty takes the mound.
As hot as the Nats are, I don't have enough confidence in their bullpen to win this one in nine innings, so I'm looking at a safer play here and that they can keep it close in the first five innings.
Picks: Nationals F5 +0.5 (-140), FanDuel Sportsbook
