ANALYSIS: Detroit Tigers starting pitcher Mike Fiers only threw two innings in his last appearance, a start on Wednesday against the Reds, snapping a six quality start streak. Spanning from June 27, Fiers was 2-2 in that time period, but had a 2.06 ERA in 39 1/3 innings and walked just eight batters. Fiers is 7-6 with a 3.48 ERA this season, walking just 26 batters in 119 innings.
As good as his control has been, Fiers' strikeout numbers have fallen off massively this season, going from 146 in 153 1/3 innings for the Astros last season to just 87 this season. Even in his strongest stint of the season, Fiers still only punched out 28 batters and his 90.9% strand rate led to a 3.76 FIP. A trade to the Athletics was on the table for Fiers as well, which would have helped him in the wins category, but that apparent deadline deal fell through.
Fiers will pitch in Los Angeles against the Angels on Monday before potentially pitching against the Twins at home next weekend. Neither are particularly tough matchups for Fiers, who left his last start after being hit by a line drive. Assuming that he does not have any issues from being hit on the shin, he is a good streamer in deeper leagues.
