The NASCAR Cup Series ran a single practice session at Michigan International Speedway on Saturday afternoon in preparation for the upcoming FireKeepers Casino 400 on Sunday afternoon.
Due to the threat of rain, NASCAR decided to run one unified practice session with all 36 cars participating this weekend. The rain eventually did end up coming down, and the session was cut short about halfway through the scheduled distance. Qualifying was also cancelled due to the rain.
Michigan is a two-mile oval track that is a "high-horsepower" venue. The engine builders get to flex their muscles at Michigan, and we'll see some super high speeds heading into turn one this weekend. The Cup Series visits Michigan once per season, and the two winners here in the Next Gen era have been Chris Buescher (2023) and Kevin Harvick (2022).
Important Practice Notes
Ross Chastain - Chastain jumped to the top of the speed chart a little later into the practice session and was very happy with his No. 1 Chevrolet when interviewed during the rain stoppage. He was hoping that NASCAR would cancel the rest of practice (which they ultimately ended up doing) so that his competitors weren't able to catch up to him in speed.
Kaulig Racing - Both AJ Allmendinger and Daniel Hemric actually looked impressive during this practice session compared to the speed that we're accustomed to out of the No. 16 and No. 31 Chevrolets.
Martin Truex Jr - The No. 19 Toyota was super fast during this practice session, ranking second-fastest on the single lap speed chart while posting the best ten-lap average.
