The New York Mets have acquired closer Tyler Clippard from the Oakland A's, according to Fox Sports. Oakland received promising Mets prospect Casey Meisner in return. The 20 year-old RHP is still a couple seasons away from contributing at the MLB level.
The Mets weren’t the only team in the race for Clippard. The Washington Nationals were one of the other teams involved, with whom Clippard spent seven years of his career and made two All-Star appearances.
He has 50 saves throughout his career, including 17 this season. He could be used as a closer or possibly in the eighth inning role for the Mets for the remainder of the season.
Clippard owns a 2.79 ERA with 38 strikeouts in 38 2/3 innings pitched. He hasn’t pitched much this season, which means there’s a lot left in the tank for the 30-year-old. He is owed $8.3 million this season and is a free agent after the season ends.
The Mets are two games back from the Nationals for first place in the NL East. Washington hasn’t made a move yet before the MLB Trade Deadline, though New York acquired Juan Uribe and Kelly Johnson from the Atlanta Braves, boosting the struggling offense.
